In April 1923, Lord Carnarvon died from an infected mosquito bite. This unfortunate event encouraged newspaper rumours of a sinister curse, adding (1923) included gigantic pharaoh statues, 21 sphinxes and a magnificent recreation of the Gates of Ramesses. And hand-in-hand with the Hollywood epic came the Egyptian revival popcorn movie palaces: Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, Los Angeles (1922), Peery's Egyptian Theater, Utah (1924), and The Egyptian Theatre, DeKalb, Illinois (1929) – all spectacular settings to watch Boris Karloff star in (1932).
