It is 50 years since the first volume of Peter Baughan’s history, one of what were then the ‘standard’ David & Charles ‘line histories’ of significant railways of the United Kingdom appeared, so a ‘new’ history is timely – and very welcome.
Being a ‘new’ history the author has given his work a markedly different emphasis to that which has gone before. Civil and mechanical engineering features of the line, train services and operating practices, accidents and incidents, triumphs and decline all receive relevant treatment but it is the railway in its social context which is the author’s principal concern.
