On the ground floor of Kenya Airways’ head offices off Nairobi’s Airport North Road lies a room with futuristic decor. Save for the large poster of a plane pasted on one wall, you have to look harder to decipher the room’s affinity with aviation – but there are subtle hints: the ceramic cups on which some light bulbs hang once served passengers in Business Class; a disused aircraft tyre, tastefully decorated with African thread, serves as a coffee table; the floor is clad with carpet stripped from planes. There is even a ‘chandelier’ made out of old wheelchair hubs that once assisted airline passengers living with disabilities.
