CHINESE SCHOLARLY OBJECTS

What to Sell Now

At our recent Asian Art sale, objects from the Chinese) for storing ink brushes have become synonymous with the art of the literati and are made in a wide variety of materials from bamboo to ivory, horn, jade, bronze and porcelain. We were consigned an indigenous hardwood brush pot from the Qing period (1644-1911), carved with a scene of scholars by a pavilion or a river in a mountainous landscape, which made £14,300. Another of the items required for the table of a Chinese scholar was an inkstone for the grinding and storage of ink and a Qing dynasty example carved with shou characters sold for £3,250, alongside a mid Ming period (1368-1644) blue and white writing box that made £780.
