There are so many incredible LGBTQI women and non-binary changemakers in our community. It was quite the task to narrow this list down to just 100. We are seeing more LGBTQI people than ever before represented onscreen and thriving across various sectors.
That said, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Whilst our times are often referred to as the “golden age of gay”, there are numerous battles ongoing.
Here in the UK, we are still feeling the effects of Section 28, and across the pond in the US we are seeing our pasts echoed with the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Around the globe there is a rise in homophobia and transphobia.
In the UK, many in our government seem focused on dividing and conquering our wonderful community, demonstrated by the recent refusal to protect trans and non-binary people within the ban on conversion “therapy”. This bleak news was soothed by the powerful display of solidarity, with people posting about #LGBwithTheT and staging protests urging for all to be included within the ban. These times are a stark reminder of the need to stand together and fight for a better future for our community.
With that said, we must also take time to celebrate how far we have come. The folks on this list are proof that individuals and groups can spark great change. So join us in raising a toast to the work that they’ve done in increasing visibility, providing representation and fighting for a more just world.
