Upholstery falls into two main traditional and modern. Traditional techniques involve using tacks and horsehair to hand-tie and sew materials such as stuffing and wadding - that form the shape. Modern techniques use staples and foam to do this, and are generally quicker. I would advise using traditional techniques when working on antiques as they will be more sympathetic. But, for smaller budgets, modern upholstery involves more affordable materials and faster turnaround times.
