LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Capture the fragility and translucency of poppies

Simplify the background to give a diffused effect

Practise wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, lifting-out and scratching-out techniques

This photograph (below) captures the dynamic beauty of a pink poppy contrasted against a garden environment of diffused distant poppies and the varied greens of the foliage. In this demonstration I will show you how to approach the scene, focusing on the main poppy whilst giving a soft and hazy suggestion of the garden behind. I used artistic licence and added more leaves in the foreground to create a more stylised composition.

To capture the freshness and luminosity of the poppy I chose to use Jackman’s Handmade Professional Watercolour. I hope you enjoy painting along with me.
