Keith Chester’s feature was a most enjoyable read since it invoked many memories of similar experiences.
If I may mention one of them, it would also be to the Erzbergbahn, on Mon.27th and Tue.28th February 1978. The line had been completely dieselised in the week prior to our arrival but, (un)fortunately, two of the 2043 class locos had collided at Vordernberg on Fri.24th, putting them temporarily out of action. This led to the resumption of steam – locos 97.203/204/217 in use, plus diesel 2085.01.
On the Monday and Tuesday, the workings were as follows:
07.28 & 14.10 ex Vordernberg – 97.203 plus 97.217 at rear;
09.39 ex Vordernberg – 2085.01 plus 97.204 at rear.
All other departures were cancelled.
On the Tuesday permits were obtained to ride on the 14.10
