IN HIS days as Proteas captain, he was mocked for being so into his image. The just-so hair, the on-trend outfits, the tattoos, the designer beard – his appearance received almost as much attention as his performance on the pitch.

And today Faf du Plessis looks like he’s just stepped off a yacht – camel-coloured trousers, elegant white sweater, hair in a perfect fade and pendant around his neck.

Looks mean a lot to the 38-year-old, who’s regarded as one of the finest fielders of all time and among the best all-format batsmen of his era. But he admits the flak he received got under his carefully moisturised skin.
