FOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY
Why look somewhere else when you can make a difference right where you are? Simply look out of your window beyond the hardship, and you will see the potential in your own community, says Geronimo de Klerk (20).
Geronimo believes God has placed him where he is to lead his community. That’s why he and elder brother Valentino (22), founded the Feed the Future for Life organisation shortly before lockdown level five was announced.
The organisation helps communities in and around Elsies River in the Western Cape to establish their own gardens in their own backyard. They have already established five community gardens and helped 22 others to get going. The duo also helps enthusiastic new gardeners with equipment to maintain their gardens.
For their message to have major impact, Valentino and Geronimo produced their own documentary, Garden Boyz. It was released last year, and was their way of telling young people gardening is cool. “Elsies is not only about gangs and violence. There are many messages of hope here why does nobody talk about that?”
