An insult to the profession
Andy Hall’s email in May’s edition about the role of caddies, which referred to them as purely “bag carriers”, was, to be perfectly honest, rude and wide of the mark. There are many sports where you have the main character, ably assisted by an assistant. Boxers and their trainers, tennis players and their coaches and so on.
Caddying is avoice of reason, trusted adviser, mentor, encourager and critical friend who knows how and when to speak to their professional golfer. I suggest Andy Hall goes to a caddies’ meeting and explains himself or, better still, tries it for himself – then he will learn he is not just there to carry the bag.
