Avoid cloudy glasses

There’s little chance of you admiring the starbright brilliance of your favourite white wine if you’re looking through a wall of opaque glass. We explain what causes this cloudiness and share our tips on keeping glassware in top condition.

1 Watersource Cloudy glass occurs in both hard- and soft-water areas, but is more common in hard-water areas, due to the higher levels of minerals that attach themselves to your treasured glasses during all that time in the dishwasher.

2 Staytopped up For those who must use a dishwasher, rinse aid can help prevent minerals and dirt from settling on your glasses.

3 Avoidthe heat The high temperature of many drying cycles can bake in the minerals. If possible, choose the glassware setting on your washer, or adjust the temperature. Alternatively, consider stepping in after the rinse, removing the glasses to air-dry or dry with a cloth.

4 Rescuemission If your glassware is already spoiled, then more extreme measures are required. ‘Try soaking the glasses in white vinegar to dissolve the minerals, or rub the affected areas gently with bicarbonate of soda or nail polish remover,’ advises DWWA Co-Chair Ronan Sayburn MS. ‘I’ve also heard effervescent denture cleaners can help!’
