The first time Robben Ford teamed up with Bill Evans in recent years was on 2019’s The Sun Room. Fuelled by the success of that album, both from the point of view of public interest and the musical synergy both displayed during its course, a sequel seemed a foregone conclusion. Meanwhile, Robben’s landmark solo record, Pure [2021] was garnering high praise from all who heard it. Here, we discuss Robben’s new collaboration and take a look at his approach to improvisation and his plans to take time out from touring.
How did you begin working with Bill Evans?
“Bill and I had been working together off and on over the years. Just a
