Glazing is likely to be one of the biggest financial outlays on a build project so choosing the right style windows for your home is paramount. But there’s such a vast choice from a multitude of suppliers that if you’ve not bought windows before, it can be a little overwhelming to know where to look or what to look out for. Not only will you want the windows to look good, you’ll want them to function well, too. From thermal efficiency to security and materials, it’s a lot to ask in terms of performance and design.

WHERE TO START?

To help pinpoint what style of windows might work for your home, it’s worth answering a few questions first to gauge how you want them to function. Gathering this information will work twofold — it will inform your plans and will help suppliers understand what you’re looking for when you come to order.

● Are you going with ‘standard’ sized windows (see page 140) or are the openings bespoke?

● Are you extending and need light to reach deep into the floorplan?

● Are there planning conditions that dictate the style of windows you’ll need?

● Will windows be bought to match and work with patio and/or front doors?

● Do you want to maximise the view?

● Are you after a large opening?

Windows are often referred to as the ‘eyes’ of a home (with the façade being the ‘face’) and how they look, both from the inside and out, can have a real impact on the aesthetic of your home so research will be key. It’s not an element of the build that can be easily changed once it’s in situ so you want to get it right!
