The idea of a brand-new garden with a self-build can be extremely tempting and the chance to hand select all of the details has great appeal. Many people complete their vision by imagining the ultimate garden space — the layout, spa, lawns, patio and, of course, the plants.

Many of us have strong associations with plants, from childhoods spent in our grandparents’ gardens to plants that have been part of the milestones of life: we want them all, and this is sometimes where the garden-based problems can start.
