There are many factors to take into consideration when trying to decide between building an extension or loft conversion. Obviously both of these projects allow homeowners to add useful extra space to their homes without having to move house — plus each can add considerable value if they’re carried out properly.

But how do you decide which project to take on? In this article we look at the all-important build budget, how much value you can expect your loft conversion or extension to add to the value of your property, and how much space you can expect to add.

Build budget

Loft conversions are generally a more cost-effective option than extensions. A basic ‘rooflight loft loft conversion, expect to pay closer to £40,000, while a modular or mansard loft conversion could see costs of £65,000.
