Chopin wrote at least 23 polonaises for solo piano. Of these, sevenOp 51), three were published posthumously with opus numbers, six were published posthumously without opus numbers – and at least seven were lost! Among the best known are the Polonaise Op 40 No 1 (‘Military’), composed in 1838, and the Polonaise in A flat Op 53 (‘Heroic’).
