MOTSI MABUSE SHOWS SHE’S A FINE JUDGE OF HAIRSTYLES
It is one of the most vibrant programmes on TV. And while the spray tan and sequins are all part of the fun, for Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse, it is the chance to experiment with her hair that gives her the biggest lift each week.
The flamboyant former dancer showcases jaw-dropping hairstyles that are every bit as gravity-defying as the most daring dancefloor routines.
“It takes the whole day,” Motsi told The Sun. “But I wanted to… see what is possible for my sort of hair.” The 41-year-old, who experienced racism under apartheid in her native South Africa, added: “[Growing up] it was always more like: ‘Hide your hair, get your hair under control.’”
But, she explains, having a hairstylist on Strictly who understands a black person’s hair has helped. Motsi has also said: “One of the worst feelings that we get from racism is shame. Like, you’re ashamed to speak about your hair and say, ‘Can I get it properly done?’
“When I went to Strictly, they organised for somebody to do my hair. She brings products, she doesn’t judge me. And I realised: I’ve been doing TV for 15 years and this makes such a difference.”
