Portsmouth made a solid start to the League One season, unbeaten in nine games. How pleased were you?

Credit firstly to all of the players, for being relentlessly consistent. We came together quite late in pre-season – you always like to have the squad together from the beginning of the summer, but that wasn’t possible. The players were very adaptable and they took on a lot of ideas in a short period. As a manager you try to earn time – it’s probably the only profession where you have to win to earn time to do your job successfully. That’s the nature of management. We have a nice blend. We’ve got 12 players in the squad
