When the time arrived for the local introduction of the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf range, the line-up had been cut to only two performance-orientated variants: the 180 kW GTI, which arrived in the third quarter of 2021, and now the highly anticipated 235 kW Golf R. When the call came from VWSA for us to head to Gqeberha for a sneak preview of the halo hot hatch and a quick drive before the launch, I selflessly nominated myself to make the trip.
