THE trilogy has always held a special place in boxing. There’s an intimacy to them. They’re usually hard-fought, sometimes brutal and thrilling, forever bonding two fighters. Trilogies tend to only occur when two fighters have on each other to both agree a third fight is necessary for one of them to establish supremacy.
Ask the average fight fan about their favourite trilogy and they’ll usually respond with Ward-Gatti, Ali-Frazier, Bowe-Holyfield or Barrera-Morales. The pattern is clear with these rivalries: they left everything on the table. There have been dozens of great trilogies; my favourite is Ali-Frazier, but that might just be an age thing.
