A thermal advantage worth paying for?

Striking a comfortable balance between technology and fieldcraft seems to get increasingly difficult as shooting equipment becomes more sophisticated. While a lot of modern accessories provide a genuine advantage, others bring little more than added expense and complication. And of course, even when sophisticated gear provides a sufficient edge to justify the outlay, it does raise the question of where to draw the line in terms of what is sporting and what is not.
