NOBEL CHEMISTS MAKE MOLECULES ‘CLICK’

This accomplishment could revolutionise cancer treatment

A TRIO of scientists, who have developed a way to “snap molecules together” in order to explore cells, map DNA and design drugs that can target diseases such as cancer more precisely, have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Americans Carolyn Bertozzi and Karl Barry Sharpless, and Danish scientist Morten Meldal were awarded the prestigious prize for their work, which has been described as “sort of like molecular Lego”.

“It’s all about snapping molecules together,” said Johan Åqvist, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, who announced the winners in Stockholm, Sweden.
