IF YOU HAVE already begun your liberty journey with your horse, there will invariably come a time when you will need to bring him back to you. What equine in the early stages of their training doesn't wander off? In fact, recall, as well as send away, form the foundations of liberty training. This won't only make your horse better to lunge, as lunging forms a part of the initial training process, too, but recall is all about creating a system to reconnect with your horse when his focus or connection is lost while he's working at liberty. And all of this will help to strengthen that vital bond that exists between you.

“Send away and recall are the keys to the liberty kingdom,” says Ben Atkinson, who has taught hundreds of horses the art of liberty all over the world and who is a part of Atkinson Action Horses. “Get this bit right and the rest is plain sailing. If you've done this work with your horse and they lose their focus, they will look to you for help and will come to you. They will be searching for something familiar.
