Psilocybin and psychedelic medicine

Psilocybin is a compound that exists naturally in more than 200 mushroom species. These mushrooms are also known as ‘magic mushrooms’, because ingestion can cause hallucinations that distort the perception of reality and alter sensory impressions.

In May 2022 Australia’s CSIRO was granted a new licence to work with local biomed companies on ways to extract, synthesise and develop manufacturing processes for psilocybin and a dozen other compounds, including also methylene-dioxymethamphetamine (MDMA).
