Knowledge to grub up on

I was half-watching BBC1’s Countryfile recently (4 September) when a report on alternative feeds for laying hens to produce carbon-neutral eggs caught my attention.

It seems that ongoing research has proven that feeding chickens on a ration of maggots (produced on farms where the maggots are fed on food-waste from supermarkets) will drastically save on carbon emissions when compared to high carbon-emission feeds derived from imported soya. The presenters seemed taken aback by this research but I didn’t think it was ground-breaking science.
