I am in the process of compiling deer management reports. Any estate that is involved in woodland management that is part of a government scheme such as Countryside Stewardship has to produce these reports to verify that effective management of deer is in place to reduce the woodland habitat damage that is being caused by the deer.
The data now required in such reports has changed over the years from what was a simple cull plan to the current in-depth records. These records include, among other things, ongoing population demographics and the monitoring of habitat damage. All of this data supports the cull figures and corroborates the need for the subsequent cull plan.
To enable this to be as accurate as possible, it is logical that there needs to be large amounts of information to back it up; the larger the amount of data, the more verifiable the cull plan.
I have written before about the data that members of the Greenlee Deer Management group need to
