When creating a new collection, fashion designer Emilia Wickstead imagines ways to reinterpret a contemporary wardrobe, whilst remaining informed and inspired by women of the past.

“The customer has this multilayered lifestyle,” she tells us, when we catch up on Zoom. And what really resonates for me, is thinking about who this woman is and how we’re modernising her so she can suddenly become our modern day muse for the season.”

Emilia’s AW22 show was a love letter to the cinematography of Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni, particularly his seminal films L’Avventura (1960) and La Notte (1961), in which the female lead was played by actress Monica Vitti.

“I was very much taken by the visuals of these black and white films. Thinking about the woman and her wardrobe. I looked at her from a purely visual perspective, as opposed to examining the role she played.
