Hibiscus flowers bring back memories of beachside holidays and tropical islands. The island of Hawaii has claimed the hibiscus as its state flower and the shrub is often called Hawaiian hibiscus.

Yet, despite that common name, hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is native to China. Its oriental origins are commemorated in the plant’s species name rosa-sinensis or “rose of China”.
