An extremely bright fireball lit up the night sky across Otago and Southland at 10.50pm on August 28. Witness reports streamed in. While hundreds of meteors cross the sky each night, the meteoroid – the rock that travels through space and causes the fireball – normally vaporises in the high atmosphere long before anything survives as a meteorite, the material that reaches the ground.
