In 2019, my girlfriend Leani and I were country bumpkins living the slow life in Pringle Bay near Cape Town. We were both at crossroads in our careers and we decided we needed a change, so we applied to teach English in China. We'd never heard of Qingdao in Shandong province, but when we both landed teaching jobs there almost instantly, it felt like the stars had aligned.
