Music is what I remember most when reaching back into my earliest memories. I am sitting amongst my whiskey bottles, listening to Metallica, staring out the window calling back memories of my youth – a period of discovery, music, fashion, and creative talents, immersing myself in things that would shape the person I would become. It wasn’t until I began creating cocktails, that I would offer to the public via bars and restaurant menus, that I realized where my inspiration for flavors came from: it was always music.
Recently I had an opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with a man creating flavors as an expression of music, specifically Metallica’s music. I wanted to know how Rob Dietrich, master distiller and blender of Blackened American Whiskey, experienced flavors and how he expressed flavors to others. Being an (almost) lifelong Metallica fan, I was intrigued by his process.
Rob has one
