IN PERSPECTIVE

Finely Curated

AS THE storied Art Dealers Association of America celebrates its 60th anniversary, it will host its 34th edition of “The Art Show” at the Park Avenue Armory from November 3 to 6. The nonprofit fair was founded to benefit the Henry Street Settlement, one of New York City’s leading social services organization, and over the more than three decades of partnership over $35 million has been raised for the cause.

This year, The Art Show will welcome a record of 78 booths from ADAA member galleries, with each presenting a curated exhibition as you would find at their gallery showroom. Of those, 55 booths will have solo presentations—another fair record. Five dealers that joined ADAA in 2022 will participate in the fair, while six galleries will return to the fair after having paused participation in recent years. Others are notable mainstays that have crafted must-see shows over the years.

“The Art Show is a special time of year for ADAA art galleries nationwide as it remains the only fair of self-selected exhibitors and is thus reflective of a tight-knit community of many of the top galleries across the country,” says Anthony Meier, president of the ADAA. “The rigorous peer review process that all ADAA members undertake before being admitted to the organization not only accounts for the high caliber of thoughtfully curated presentations that one can always expect to see at The Art Show, but also for the level of connoisseurship and diligence all dealers bring to their trade.”

At the Petzel booth, collectors will find new paintings by Ross Bleckner featuring floral motifs, such as in an untitled 2022 work, and others that are closer to pure abstraction. Antônio Henrique Amaral, a notable artist in Brazilian and Latin American art, will be spotlighted by Mitchell-Inness & Nash. Included in the exhibit is A maral’s 1993 painting As Time Goes By, which shows the passage of time through lunar phases and is accompanied by skulls, swords and fencing. Historical works by Julio Le Parc’s Alchimie series, including the acrylic on canvas Alchimie 216 (1992) that provides an umbrella-like illusion, will be presented by Nara Roesler. Alongside the two-dimensional works by Le Parc is a kinetic sculpture.

Among the pieces from Meredith Ward Fine Art is an untitled abstract painting by Flora Crockett from around the 1940s to 1950s. The painting features three combinations of shapes including a colorful spiral at lower left. New York dealer Debra Force Fine Art will have a group exhibition of significant paintings, works on paper and sculpture examining 20th-century American Modernism including Marguerite Zorach’s figurative work Kate and Oscar Gibbons, Maine (Cook’s Holi day), painted in 1930.

The benefit preview for The Art Show will take place November 2. Single day tickets are $30 and $20 if purchased by October 19. For the first time, multi-day passes will be available for run of the show. Proceeds for ticket sales benefit the Henry Street Settlement.

Ruby Jubilee

THE 40 anniversary of the “San Francisco Fall Show” will be seeing red with its Ruby Jubilee held October 13 through 16 at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture’s Festival Pavilion. The show will embrace all shades of red, which is a color considered in many cultures around the world to symbolize energy, romantic love and good luck. Leaning into the rubies theme, the gemstone is thought to possess qualities including
