Having spent the Covid-19 lockdown giving my VW 1.9 TD T4 a revamp with a fresh coat of pastel blue military grade paint and fitting an unintentionally high lift kit, it was time to get back on the road. With the global pandemic restricting travel abroad, me and my girlfriend, Lucy, took the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with Cornwall, taking four separate weekends to do the north and south coast. With a carefully planned itinerary and a goal to cram as much in as possible, each trip away felt fulfilling and rejuvenating. It’s this ability to make the most of weekends that makes me love vans so much!
Spring in our step
Despite being April, our first weekend away was blessed by warm weather which allowed us to get a reasonable sleep (despite the howling winds) at our first stopover in Tintagel. As it was Lucy’s first time away in the van, we booked into a campsite. This trip was important because I wanted her to fall in love with van life – just like I had six years previously – so that she’d want to go again. The campsite was perched on a cliff edge, a short walk from the town and right next to the coastal path – the perfect spot to access Tintagel as well as enjoy the views and sunsets.
The next day we went to one of my favourite spots in Cornwall; a small hidden beach accessed via a farm near Delabole. It takes 20 minutes to drop down to the beach but a lot longer to climb back up! Remember this when planning your day because the beach is extremely tidal; get it right and you can enjoy the beautiful sands, caves, rockpools and occasionally some perfect waves for a surf.
