Q I’m thinking of upgrading my Nikon AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5‑5.6G ED VR telephoto zoom for use with my D7500 and favour shooting handheld. What would you recommend?

A The thing to consider is why you actually want to upgrade your lens. Are you after a lens with a similar zoom range but better performance, or a lens with a ‘faster’ aperture, or something with longer telephoto reach?

For the first option, I’d go for the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR (£629/$597), which has super-fast autofocus, 4.5-stop VR, and delivers
