Stormy passage off north Brittany

Our plan was to sail Bumble Chugger, our Cornish Shrimper 19, along the north coast of Brittany from Plouër-sur-Rance, round Cap Finisterre and along the south coast to Loctudy. We’d initially intended to sail round the west coast from the south in 2007, but a series of gales sweeping in off the Atlantic had thwarted us.

We had reached Lezardrieux after three hard days sailing against quite a strong wind, with intermittent fierce squalls.

The next day started with a lovely calm morning, but by 0900 the wind was up again. The forecast said that it would basically be a Force 5 that day, with gusts of Force 7 during the morning. We’d decided to visit Ile de Bréhat in the morning and set off for the journey
