Hong Kong, formerly VS6, was a British colony for over a century, under a long-term lease agreement with China. When that lease expired on July 1, 1997, administration of Hong Kong was returned to the People’s Republic of China, which made it a “Special Administration Region” (“HKSAR”) and changed the amateur radio callsign prefix to VR2.
The Hong Kong Amateur Radio Transmitting Society (HARTS), the IARU member society after the 1997 handover, remains and performs the same functions as before. HARTS is a major supporting organization providing an important source of volunteers
