The film director Baz Luhrmann does not do things by halves; all his films, from and through to and now this flamboyant biopic of rock and roll’s first great hero are extravagant, visually dazzling and occasionally just a touch over the top. Which makes him the perfect choice to direct a film about a rock and roll icon who, cast adrift from his roots by fame and riches beyond the dreams of avarice, ended his days bloated and essentially alone except for a coterie of hangers-on.
