A gardener’s MISCELLANY

This week it’s:

Autumn flowers

We look at flowers that provide colour in autumn

FOR gardeners, talk of ‘autumn colour’ usually refers to changing leaf tints, with gorgeous golds, russets, oranges, reds and yellows. Or perhaps we think of autumn berries. But this week I want to focus on some of the flowers that provide colour at this time of year. The autumn floral offering is huge, if you think about it. So, let’s take a look at a story from each of the following: dahlias, chrysanthemums, Japanese anemones, and also autumn-flowering species of gentian, cyclamen and snowdrop.

■ Border or cutting garden dahlias tend to be 3-5ft (90cm-1.5m) in height. However, , which grows wild in Central America, can grow to 20ft (6m) – and higher!
