Steer clear of the cowboys

Like shooting driven grouse and catching a fresh-run salmon, stalking a red stag is often very near the top of many of our sporting bucket lists.

The ‘Monarch of the Glen’ is a flagship British species, and even those who have done plenty of lowland stalking will tell you that crawling through the heather in your tweed breeks and catching the whiff of a stag on the wind is a totally different experience. Some of us are lucky enough to receive invitations to stalk stags but for many people, it’s a case of biting the proverbial non-toxic bullet and paying for an outing.
