FIAT 500 (1957-1975)

Smaller than the Topolino and 600 models that preceded it, the ‘Nuova’ 500 is largely recognised as the genesis of the proper city car, with its cheap price getting many off their scooters and on to four wheels for the first time. Dante Giacosa’s superbly packaged creation initially boasted just 13bhp from its rear-mounted 479cc engine, but it was quickly improved and a success story was born.
