Two or three centuries ago, arranged marriages were quite usual within Britain’s upper-middle and upper classes. Fathers would discuss and negotiate about the marriages of sons and daughters, and ‘interested parties’ (such as wealthy relatives or family connections further up the social ladder) would make their contribution, often demanding to be consulted from the beginning.
