World population to hit new record

THE world is continuing to grow. According to a new report released by the United Nations, the global population is expected to reach 8 billion people in November this year.

The World Population Prospects 2022 was released last month on World Population Day, which celebrates people around the world, the progress they have made and the challenges they’ve overcome.

“This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognise our common humanity and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates,” says UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres.

Eight billion people on the planet might sound like a lot, but the UN says that the world’s population has been growing at its slowest pace since 1950. This is because of a decrease in birth rates (the average number of births per woman during their life).
