IT’S always exciting to watch the world’s top stars compete at a sporting spectacular. So after two years of cancelled sporting events, empty stadiums and Covid disruptions, the spirit was strong among fans and competitors alike at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
And there were enough dollops of drama, surprising wins, disappointing losses, controversy and cheers to keep viewers glued to their screens. We take a closer look.
THE OPENING CEREMONY
● Creator of the hit TV series Peaky Blinders and Birmingham native Steven Knight had a hand in creating the opening ceremony.
● Prince Charles stood in for Queen Elizabeth, who’s the head of the Commonwealth, at the opening ceremony and presided over the culmination of the Queen’s Baton Relay. This is a tradition dating back to 1958 and involves a baton carrying a message from the queen being taken on a journey across the Commonwealth.
● It left from Buckingham Palace on 7 October 2021, and after being carried by athletes
