New South Wales Private Sidings

In the 1950s and 60s there were still quite a number of private sidings in the metropolitan area of Australian capital cities, as well as numerous private sidings at country stations. In the agricultural areas there were numerous siding complexes for grain traffic as well as sidings serving stock yards. Many stations had sidings for one or more oil companies for the delivery of fuel in tank wagons, while other companies had sidings for the delivery of bulk fertilizer to be distributed to local farmers, in addition to the railway operated goods sheds.

In this period the railways still had a very large parcel service. Passenger and mail trains had large luggage sections or even complete vans. In the metropolitan areas of Sydney and Melbourne, there were specific
