I had hunted with Evan Couzens, owner of Umziki Hunting Safaris back in 2014, and told him that I would enjoy hunting for the Tiny Ten, and about three years ago, he contacted me asking if I would like to plan for that safari. Sounded easy enough, so a plan was set in motion. The hunt was to take place in May 2020 but as Covid hit, it had to be rescheduled twice. Finally we settled on April 2021 and things came together.
Sixty-two hours after leaving home I found myself in Outjo, Namibia, the gateway to Etosha National Park. I was expecting vast sand dunes, but what I found was a stunning landscape teaming with animals. I was on a short, two-day hunt with Lukas Holtzausen owner of Arfika Jag Safaris, and was pleased to find out that the long drought had not affected the dik-dik population as much as the rest of the animals. After looking over dozens, we found a good ram and soon number one was in the salt. Lucas spent the rest of the time with me showing me the spectacular countryside, and treating me like one of his family.
