FINS

Diving technology has advanced rapidly with the times and today’s equipment has moved well beyond providing basic functionality. This is even true for the humble fin. In essence, it is a tool to aid divers in maneuvering through the water with ease. However, it has evolved to be so much more than that. Modern-day fins make very real contributions to minimising turbulence and maximising efficiency of oxygen consumption.

Leonardo DaVinci was one of the first to explore the concept of fins. However, the invention of the first pair of fins can be attributed to an 11-year-old Benjamin Franklin, who ingeniously crafted them out of thin pieces of wood in the early 1700s. In time, with the development of synthetic rubber, plastic and carbon fibre, fins have been fabricated with increasingly complex materials using increasingly sophisticated manufacturing techniques. Open heel fins, closed heel fins, blade fins, split fins, turtle fins, freediving fins – there are also numerous varieties and countless brands to choose from. Begin your search here.
