When, 18 years ago, the Mahindra brand was first introduced (incidentally, also at Gerotek) to South Africa not many people took note. At that point there were many ‘unknown’ brands entering the market and while Mahindra’s offerings were not half bad, not many people expected the brand to grow as steadily as it did.
Fast forward close to two decades later and very few people realise just how big this Indian automaker really is. It has been the world’s largest manufacturer of tractors since 2010, and after Tata and Suzuki it is the third largest automotive brand in India. In South Africa, the brand has made positive inroads in especially the highly contested affordable passenger, SUV and bakkie market. In fact, its competent Pik Up-series – assembled at its plant based just outside of Durban – regularly features among the
