Villa revamp

So you’ve built your first home. It’s modern, low-maintenance, weathertight and everything you and your architect ever dreamed of. But something doesn’t feel quite right.

For hair and make-up artist Kate Smith and her husband Richard Humphries, the founder of online home improvement store Trade Tested, the missing piece of the jigsaw was location.

“We’re both inner-city people,” says Kate, who has lived in Auckland since 2001. “And although we found an amazing section in Hillsborough for a great price and built a fabulous house, being in the suburbs wasn’t really us.”
