IVEN that its name translates as “Parrot Park”, it’s no surprise that the parrot collection here is vast. The general pattern is of type-specific sections around the park, for example Amazon parrots, conures, lories and lorikeets, and so on. These are either housed in large group aviary settings or in single-pair aviaries. During our recent family visit, my personal highlights included the Lear’s macaws (), with which the Loro Parque Foundation has enjoyed great breeding results and has enabled the reintroduction of youngsters back into the wild (News, September 7). My bird of the day, however, was the diminutive and highly vibrant Philippine hanging parrot (), a real gem.
